The Concept of Wellness –  Wellness is a familiar concept frequently stated in the context of health. Though wellness is a multifaceted active process that culminates in a more prosperous and fulfilling life, health in itself is a state well being that incorporates physical, mental and social factors. Therefore, this topic discusses wellness as it relates to health.

What is the Concept of Wellness? What is the Concept of Wellness

The National Institute of Wellness considers wellness “an active procedure through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence”. This meaning allows a better understanding of wellness using the following tenets:

Wellness is an active procedure; it is a conscious, autonomous and continuous process of achieving full potential as individuals.

Health considers multiple components: lifestyle, spiritual well-being, mental well-being, and setting.

The Creation Health Organization defines wellness as “the best state of well-being of individuals and groups”. According to the WHO, wellness has two primary concerns: the achievement of individuals’ fullest potentials physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually and economically, and carrying out individuals’ expectations in the family, community, place of worship, workplace and other settings.

Health Versus Wellness

Health is often used interchangeably with wellness, yet, the two concepts have different origins. The World Health Organization defines health as “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. This definition of health proposes health as not only being the absence of disease but encompassing a broader scope of the medical perspective of health.

Successful more, health has its determinants, which consist of social, physical and economic environments, as well as individual characteristics and behaviors. The achievement of stability and the improvement of health goes beyond a requirement of the earlier environmental factors or smooth the systems of care.

It requires a combination of the best lifestyle choices

At this point, we see the overlap between wellness and health. People often think about wellness in terms of physical health — nutrition, exercise, weight management, etc., but it is so much more. Wellness is a rounded integration of bodily, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit.

Although it always includes striving for health, it’s more about living life fully. It is “a lifestyle and a personalized approach to living life in a way that… allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow”.

Wellness is direct towards a positive and affirming life

Wellness necessitates good self-stewardship for ourselves, those we care about, and those who care about us. For those in the helping occupations, such as ourselves in veterinary medicine, wellness is a professional and personal responsibility.

To ensure high-quality patient and client services, we have an ethical obligation to attend to our health and well-being. Sufficient self-care prevents us from harming those we serve, and according to Green Cross Standards of Self Care Guidelines, no situation or person can justify neglecting it

Wellness includes eight symbiotic dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental. Attention must be given to all the sizes, as neglect over time will adversely affect others and eventually one’s health, well-being, and excellence in life.

They do not, however, have to be equally balanced. We should aim, instead, to strive for an “individual harmony” that feels most authentic to us. We naturally have our priorities, approaches, and aspirations, including our views of what it means to live life fully.

Corporeal Wellness

The Concept of Wellness dimension is concerned with cardiovascular fitness, strength, suppleness, and so on. Activities that may remain approved to improve physical health involve exercise regimens, diet, and close observation of health indices, including stressors. It also includes health promotion behaviors and avoiding harmful health behaviors.

Intellectual/Cognitive Wellness

This component of wellness refers to knowledge attainment and intellectual activity. When information is acquired, it can remain shared and used to develop one’s potential to improve personal growth and society. In addition, sound intellectual functioning helps improve an individual’s well-being overall. Influencing behavior, especially for transforming negative health habits into positive ones.
